With series of steps taken by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) for becoming a solar city, it has been able to reduce its energy bills by a whopping amount of Rs 1523.4 Lakhs against 331 units of energy from 2001 to 2006.

The TMC in 2000 decided to become a solar city after which it initiated a series of measures to reduce the consumption of green house gases by making few changes in the TMC’s headquarters and its other buildings. As per the details provided by the TMC officials the TMC has in the last five years which is since 2001 till 2006 has been able to save Rs 1523.4 Lakhs. The saving have been done despite a continuous rise in the population and a corresponding increase in the energy consumption. The saving have been possible due to an investment made by the civic body of Rs 90.62 Lakhs in the same period of time in various energy conservation measures.

Commenting on the features of the project which enabled the civic body Mr. Rajan Vichare said, “In house energy audit, energy generation, promotion and utilisation of non conventional sources of energy and energy saving were the main focus points of the project and the reason why we have been able to achieve this feat.”

Indoor lighting, outdoor lighting, air conditioning, water pumping were some of the activities on which the TMC concentrated to reduce energy. The civic body in order to operate these various amenities resorted to the use of solar energy which helped it considerably in reducing the use of energy.

Creating awareness among employees for avoiding wasteful expenditure of electricity, preventing waste of energy from leakages in the air conditioners were some of the measures opted by the civic body to achieve the target. Also a separate cell for energy conservation with special staff was a salient feature of the achievement.

As a result of the initiative the TMC received two state level awards for its contribution towards energy conservation and energy management from the State level Maharashtra Energy Development Agency. This is for the fifth consecutive year that the civic body has been felicitated with the award in the energy sector.

The Urban Development Ministry of Government of India honoured the Thane Municipal Corporation by prestigious ‘Crisil’ award for such an innovative programme. Among several project that Thane Municipal Corporation has undertaken for social cause the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme is to upgrade the lifestyle of the slum dwellers and to provide good quality homes for them.

Under this scheme the process of two big projects has been already started at Siddheshwar Talao, Panchpakhadi and Thane East. Considering the necessity of change in reservation of the plot where these projects are to be carried out, the corporation has sent a proposal to the state government to make change in the reservations. We have already rehabilitated 15 slums and wish to provide homes to thousands of slum dwellers under these schemes.

The all-round development of this historic city is the motive of Thane Municipal Corporation and hence without relying on the basic facilities and developments the corporation has accepted the opted the sociality based work system for the development. We want to bring each and every person into the flow of the development so that they should get an opportunity of their progress. As a part of this, we decided to insure all the slum dwellers and the implementation of this ambitious scheme is already started. According to it, those slum dwellers, who have paid their property tax in time would be insured by Thane Municipal Corporation.

Also due to which traffic has been organized very well.

People living in slums also have the right to get every basic facility that other are getting and hence the decision is finalised. We hope that the scheme will certainly provide pure and safe drinking water to every person in the slums.
