Thane’s water woes are almost ended as the officials of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) claim that the 110 million liters daily (MLD) water project of the TMC is finished before its estimated deadline.

Thane Municipal Corporation is the first municipal corporation in India to complete such a project. The project after completion has added to the existing quantity of water supply to Thane.

The project was sanctioned in 2006-2007 when Mr Rajan Vichare was the Mayor of Thane. The actual work started in 2007.

Another notable project is “The Water Supply” Thane is developing fast. The population is increasing because of the developments of industries. As it is close to Mumbai people of Thane had to face the problem of water supply. But because of his continuous efforts the Thane Municipal Corporation has undertaken and completed the Temghar Water Supply project worth 70 Crores before the scheduled time. This project will be useful for the water supply for next ten years.

Currently the city receives 400 MLD of water from various sources. Officials cite that due to the enormous rise in the population along the Ghodbunder road there had been a demand for additional water supply in the city.  This project is expected to fulfill the water needs of the population till 2019.

Earlier the TMC has already started commissioning 55 MLD of water from the project and the balance was started by the end of August 2009.

The areas along the Ghodbunder road, Wagle Estate and Indira Nagar are some of the regions which will benefit largely from this project.

The cost of project is said to be around Rs 100 crores funded by Central government under its Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), state government and the TMC.

About the project

In this project the TMC will draw water from the Bhatsa River located in Shahapur in Thane district, filter the water at a filtration plant at Temghar and the water would be supplied to the city by laying additional water pipelines.

The TMC began with the 110 MLD water project in October 2007 scheduled to be completed in 27 months.

The project is completed at least six months before the deadline.
The entire expenditure for this project would be recovered in the next 30 years.

Some other works such as the extension of height of the under ground water tank, constructing new water reservoirs, pumping stations for water purifications etc are going to be conducted in coming few months.
