Thane has been felicitated by the clean city award but can a city be clean without proper solid waste management? Of Course not, because Thane has its own solid waste management system and it is certainly not limited to only collection of the garbage but the scientific disposal of the collected garbage is also a very important part of it.

A deep study by the Thane Municipal Corporation over the issue revealed that the process of disposal of the garbage becomes easier if its production is lesser. Hence, corporation stared appealing residents to avoid the use plastic and other similar substances in their routine life. The present more than 16 lakh population of Thane produces nearly 550 metric tonnes of garbage for which TMC has two separate parallel disposal systems.

The first system collects the garbage from each and every corner of the city while the other segregates it to find out the recyclable ingredients from it. Garbage is being collected from its origins, from roads and it is segregated at dumping grounds also. All these process are carried out manually with the help of properly trained men and women. They are provided special identity cards so that the entire process can be carried out peacefully.

It is the fact that this system has provided employment for many people but Thane Municipal Corporation does not look at it as only a employment producing act. Corporation not only tries to know their problems, their needs and above all corporation takes special care of them to keep them fit and healthy always. After all, they are the people who take care of the health of the entire city and every person staying here.

It is our duty to make you breathe fresh air, the air that will make you feel proud of your city. We promise we will do it.

Development & Beautification of Public Gardens

As our duty to provide better natural place of enjoyment as well as to bring people close to nature, we created a Nature Park on a 12-acres plot in the city. The park that is created by private participation, is believed to be the first such park in India, which includes Amphi theatre for children and Parabola sitting arrangement for senior citizens.

125 different species of medicine plants is the speciality of this park. The park not only gives the knowledge of medicine plants but also provides the opportunity to study water reservoir plant, different birds, animals etc. The park also includes a special play section for children, a beautiful fountain and a specially designed lighting system.

In the second phase of this project we are going to construct a replica of Bhushi Dam in this park. There will be a specially designed gallery from where people can see the beauty of the plan. Along with it, Balbhavan, Nana-Nani Park, Golf course, Cycle track, and First Aid Centre will also be created at this park. In short, we are proud to say that this project will certainly be a shining star for this city.

It is a duty of any municipal corporation to take care of the health of residents by providing them the best of the nature even during the non stop development. Hence, while becoming famous as the city of industries, we always try to provide fresh breath to our citizens.

To materialise this dream, first of all we planned the green lungs of the city along with the overall development. We found that the gardens or similar spots in the city are very important for citizens for their good health and developed the old gardens and parks. As a next step of it, we planned some new concepts of parks and gardens to match the development of the city.

Ecofriendly Ganesh Visarjan Artificial Lakes

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is the first municipal corporation to create the artificial lakes for eco-friendly Ganapati Immersion. The immersion, that will not harm the feelings of devotees but at the same time it will conserve the nature and prevent the lakes from pollution.

As a part of eco-friendly drive, the civic body under the drive appeals to people to use nature friendly material in their celebrations and to avoid the use of thermacol, plastic, polythene bags and chemical colours during the celebrations.

Besides the celebrations, the TMC made arrangements for eco friendly immersions by creating artificial lakes. The idea was first implemented in 2004 by constructing one artificial lake on the bank of Railadevi Lake to avoid the pollution of the lake water as well as to conserve to under water life.

In the first year around 4000 Ganesha idols were immersed in the artificial lake. This year two lakes, 50 ft long X 30 ft wide and 10 ft deep, have been created at Railadevi where 5 to 8 ft tall idols can be immersed. Similarly two lakes of a smaller size will be constructed at Upvan and Ambeghosale lakes.

Residents have registered their reaction about the lakes and other arrangements during Ganapati immersions. According to them, this way all the lakes can be kept safe and clean if we realise our responsibilities. It would also be a matter of pride for Thane.

In case of other lakes in the city, such as Masunda Lake, Kharigaon Lake, a well-like structure is constructed specially for the immersion of idols without spoiling the entire lake water. Two huge ghats for the immersion of the Ganesh idols in the flowing water are being constructed at Parsik Retibunder and Kolshet on the Thane Creek. All types of idols could be immersed through these Ghats.

There is the compulsion of immersing the idols, taller than five feet, at the Maha Visarjan Ghats. TMC has provided some special rafts at these Ghats which will carry the idols into the deep water of the creek.

Besides this, TMC plans for special 'Idol Accepting Centres' (IAC) at several places, such as TMC head quarter, Ram Maruti Road, Vyankatesh Mandir, Jail Lake, Ambeghosale Lake, etc.

Special fibre pots, known as 'Nirmalya Kalash' have been placed at several places in the city to deposit flowers and garlands into it instead of throwing them directly into the lake water.

There will also be a watch on the entire immersion system through Close Circuit Cameras.

TMC's security force, fire brigades and around 400 volunteers of Aniruddha Academy of Disaster Management will be posted at different places with the police force for the peaceful immersion.

We feel that the increasing response in past years has proved that we are on the right track and hence believe that every year also some more citizens will join our mission. It will certainly keep the Thane clean even after the festival.

Polution free CNG Buses - Solar Energy

Beautification & Cleaning of Lakes

While conducting those projects we found that some of the plots for gardens even some gardens were encroached by the illegal structures. We razed those structures out and even developed and beautified the lakes as a part of this development. Brahmala Lake, Kacharali lake, Godutai Parulekar garden, Nature park are some the places which are developed under this project.

Our aim is to provide fresh air, healthy atmosphere to our citizens and at the same time beautification of the entire city. At some places, in this project we have not used any money from the corporations treasury. In fact at those places we have used plots that are reserved for the utilities of citizens so that we should help them to get their basic right to breath fresh air.
